GEO explained: your website as an AI source

GEO means Generative Engine Optimization: preparing content that AI search services can use as a source. Shopyai helps you check business information, structured data and access for supported AI crawlers.

Published by ShopyaiUpdated on

  • Explain what you offer
  • Show your experience
  • Be considered as a source

Put it into practice with Shopyai

  1. 1.Explain your services

Describe what you offer, where you work and who the service suits. Add your own examples and sources that readers can verify.

  2. 2.Check access and details

Use AI Crawlers & llms.txt, Structured Data and Brand & Entity where available for your website. llms.txt alone does not secure inclusion in AI answers.

  3. 3.Keep sources current

Regularly check services, contact details and evidence. Links in AI answers may bring visitors; a mention cannot be forced.

A customer asks. Your website could be the source.

Imagine you run a planning consultancy in Vienna. A customer asks an AI for help with their new bathroom. Here is how the path to your website might look.

  1. 1The customer asks

Who can plan my bathroom renovation in Vienna?

  2. 2Your website says

    • Bathroom renovation in Vienna
    • Measurements and floor plans
    • Coordination of the work
  3. 3A possible AI answer

For a bathroom renovation in Vienna, you could consider a consultancy that offers measurements, floor plans and coordination of the work.

    Source: the consultancy’s service page

Fictional example for explanation. The answer shows what a source reference can look like.

Each AI service decides whether to cite your website. We help you prepare the foundations.

SEO, AEO, GEO: what is the difference?

These three ideas go together. They all help people find and understand what you offer.

  • SEO

Be found: your website appears in search results.

  • AEO

Answer a question: your page explains how a bathroom renovation works, for example.

  • GEO

Be a source: an AI can use information from your page in an answer and link to it.

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization. Simply put, you prepare your website so it can be considered as a source for AI answers. Good SEO remains the foundation.

What should your website say?

Let’s stay with the planning consultancy. A customer wants to know: what exactly do you do, where do you work, and how do we start?

This tells us little

We are your innovative partner for perfect bathroom solutions.

This gives us something useful

We plan bathroom renovations in Vienna. We measure your bathroom, draw the floor plan and coordinate the work. After our first conversation, you receive a quote for planning.
Fictional text example. You can describe your own actual services just as clearly.

Your industry. An everyday example.

AI needs useful information for its answer. Specific services, clear processes and real examples make your page useful as a source.

  • Property

“How does an estate agent help me sell my flat?”

What makes your page useful as a source

A page explains the steps from the first viewing to the handover. It names the person responsible and shows a project example cleared for publication.

  • Skilled trades

“What does planning a bathroom renovation include?”

What makes your page useful as a source

The page describes measurements, floor plans and coordination of trades. A documented project shows which work the company carried out itself.

  • Transport & removals

“What is included in a move with furniture assembly?”

What makes your page useful as a source

The service page lists dismantling, transport and reassembly. It also explains what requires a separate agreement, helping readers describe the scope accurately.

Fictional examples for illustration, not actual search data or AI recommendations. Describe the services and processes you actually offer.

Four things you can do

You do not need to be an AI expert. Start with the page for your main service.

  1. 1Open the door

Search services need to be able to read your page. Check that it is public and which automated readers you allow. These readers are called crawlers.

    How Shopyai helps

“AI Crawlers & llms.txt”: configure access when the feature is enabled.

  2. 2Say clearly what you do

Our consultancy names three things: bathroom renovation, Vienna and the steps towards a quote. Make it just as easy for your customers.

    How Shopyai helps

“Brand & Entity”: check business details and add them in settings.

  3. 3Show real work

Show a finished bathroom, explain the planning and name the person responsible. Your own examples make your experience tangible.

    How Shopyai helps

The AI assistant helps with ideas and planning. You supply your real projects and images.

  4. 4Keep details current

New phone number? Different services? Update your website and official profiles. Remember your published translations too.

    How Shopyai helps

Update details in settings and on your pages. Then review the checks again.

These Shopyai features help you

You know your business. Shopyai helps you check the details and configure the technical settings.

  • Who may read your page?

    AI crawlers & llms.txt

Here you choose whether AI crawlers may read your page for search, training or neither. Available when the feature is enabled.

  • Who is behind your business?

    Brand & Entity

Here you check your business details and links to official profiles. You edit the details in settings.

  • Can search engines read your details?

    Structured data

Search engines also receive key details in a technical format. This check shows errors or missing information in that data.

  • What is in the extra text file?

    View llms.txt

Opens a short text overview on your website’s domain. Available when the feature is enabled. The file complements your regular pages.

Simplified illustrations. AI crawler settings and llms.txt must be enabled for your website.

More about llms.txt

llms.txt is an additional text overview of your website. This file gives no visibility benefit in Google Search. Good content on your regular pages matters more.

Turn what you know into a clear entry

In settings, under “Brand & Entity”, you can enter who runs your business and what you specialise in. Here is a filled-in example.

Brand & Entity

Founder / owner
Anna Example
Title / profession
Bathroom planner
Topics / focus areas
Bathroom planning, bathroom renovation
Simplified excerpt from settings. The name and details are fictional.

How can you tell if it helps?

Try typical customer questions. Is your website actually linked as a source? Record the question, date and service, since answers can change. Shopyai itself does not measure AI citations. Also check whether new visitors make relevant enquiries.

More questions about GEO?

Will my website definitely appear in AI answers?

No. The AI decides which sources to use. Shopyai helps you prepare. We cannot promise a particular citation or position.

Do I need to rewrite everything?

No. Start by adding what customers still need: services, locations, the process and real examples. A few clear paragraphs can often help.

What is the difference between AI search and AI training?

In AI search, a service may read your page for a current answer. In training, content is used to develop a model. Access rules differ by provider.

When will I see results?

There is no fixed timeframe. Search services first need to discover changes and may choose different sources for each question. Observe several queries over time.
